Some Hongkongers quote “我地真係好L鐘意香港” (we really f**king love Hong Kong) on the social network in this few days which come from a banner displayed on July 1st. It represents the feeling from their heart. At the same time, I and some Hongkongers share the news about the 5+1 plan for BNO holders from the British government, which is an option for Hongkongers looking for the exit way. I ask, how do we Hongkongers love Hong Kong?
Hong Kong Canton-Pop uses to be popular in mainland China and other Chinese cities & towns in the world. Nowadays, some Hongkongers live overseas for a long time who still listen to 80′ Canton-Pop, which is their connection to Hong Kong. In these few years, Hong Kong social movements and public gatherings sing the Boundless Oceans, Vast Skies (海闊天空) and Fight for 20 years (抗戰20年) of Beyond. Last year Malaysian Hip-Hop Singer Namewee wrote a song “Singing Cantonese Song” (唱廣東歌). Canton-Pop is an important cultural industry for Hong Kong, should we continue it? Nowadays we still have some young song-writers and bands working hard for Canton-pop, eg. Serrini and her GTB (with Ruby), My Little Airport, GDJYB (雞蛋蒸肉餅), they still have some gigs in Hong Kong and overseas and even won an award in overseas.
In the British colonial era of Hong Kong, English football is introduced to Hong Kong, and Hong Kong was the strongest team in Asia. Mr. Cheung Chi-Doy is the first Hongkonger and Asians join the Blackpool at the most top level of English football and scored a goal. Although nowadays Hong Kong football is no longer in the top tier of Asian football, many Hongkongers watch England Premier League. When the Hong Kong team shows a good performance, the Hong Kong stadium becomes full house eg. Hong Kong won the gold medal at East Asian Game over Japan. And the slogan “Die for Hong Kong” come from the coach Mr. Kim Pan-gon to cheer up Hong Kong team players.
Western and Chinese cultures create the success of Hong Kong in the past hundred years, not one less. Originally the Hong Kong law system is trusted by western countries, and they come to make Asia businesses in Hong Kong. And Hong Kong citizens have a good understanding of China and Asia, to do international trade easily. This is the main cause of how Hong Kong become an international financial center and commercial travel hub.
And some Hongkongers feel touching from the slogan “we really f**king love Hong Kong” because they are worried about the darkness from the recent political changes and movements. Hong Kong is no longer the Hong Kong they know. Substandard Elites betray Hong Kong destroying the 100-year success of Hong Kong, its freedom, and its culture.
The book “The world is flat” is written 15 years ago. It shows the world is connected on the internet for global collaboration, it is no longer a single country live without collaboration with others. And the huge aviation network allows busy business meetings and collaborations in the world, and Hongkongers are busy for international travel, including me. When freedom comes back, Hongkongers will continue to contribute to the world and Hong Kong with their expertise and skills.
I expect that Hongkongers will do their best at the Tokyo Olympics next July, and fight for Hong Kong.
