GNOME Asia 2022

GNOME Asia Summit 2022 is hosted in Kuala Lumpur on 2-5 December, the 1st in-person event after the COVID-19 pandemic. It is my first time to attend GNOME Asia Summit as a board member of GNOME Foundation. Thanks for Malaysia GNOME User Group to host it and previous 2 virtual conference. 2 local organisers fenris and syzawan looks like my friends who know each others for a long time.

I visited KL 10 years ago for Malaysia Open Source Conference, it is great to visit KL to meet with local open source community again.

It’s many interesting sessions but I hightlights community related sessions Code of Conducts Session by Zana, 2 D.E.I. sessions, and sessions by Felipe. My favorite sessions are newcomer workshop, GNOME Code of Conduct, 2 D.E.I sessions, font talk, presentations by student interns, and a local keynote. New contributors can learn how to kickstart their 1st contribution learnt from newcomer workshop. Local keynote speaker is better than my personal expectation, he have practical experience how to use open source software in local medical organisation, eg. capturing vital sign from medical devices, using hostapd to act as Wifi AP to communicate with medical devices.

In the last day of the Summit, organisers of PyCon MY met me at the summit to have some informal discussion about Python community, and the venue iSpace VASD was previous PyCon MY venue.

Although the attendance number is lower than expectation due to lack of local participants, and local organisers might feel a bit disappointing, but it is still a good event. We hopes the GNOME Asia Summit and community will be resumed soon after pandemic.
